Basil

Low histamine

Fresh basil is low in histamine and doesn't meaningfully trigger histamine release.

Basil is a fresh herb with no fermentation or aging involved, so it stays low on the histamine scale.

  • Fresh vs dried — fresh basil is generally the most tolerated form; dried herbs concentrate their compounds, and some people find they're more reactive to dried versions

  • Pesto consideration — basil itself is fine, but traditional pesto often includes aged parmesan and pine nuts, which add their own histamine load

Using fresh basil as a topping or finish tends to be the gentlest approach.
