Tequila

High histamine

Tequila is a distilled spirit, so its main histamine concern is alcohol blocking the enzyme your body uses to break histamine down.

As a distilled agave spirit, tequila doesn't carry significant histamine from production — but the alcohol it contains interferes with DAO, your body's main tool for clearing histamine.

  • Distillation clears histamine — unlike fermented drinks like wine or beer, distillation removes most histamine, so tequila's impact comes primarily from the alcohol itself rather than the drink's histamine content

  • Aged vs. unaged — reposado and añejo tequilas are barrel-aged, which may introduce additional compounds compared to blanco (unaged) tequila, though the difference in histamine terms is not well established

Blanco tequila is the simplest in terms of added aging and additional compounds, if that matters to you.
