Rum

High histamine

Rum is a distilled spirit, so its main histamine concern is alcohol blocking the enzyme your body uses to clear histamine.

As a distilled spirit, rum doesn't contain significant histamine itself — but the alcohol interferes with DAO, the enzyme responsible for breaking down histamine in your body.

  • Distillation removes histamine — unlike wine or beer, distilled spirits lose most histamine during production, so the drink itself is less of a direct source

  • Aging adds complexity — darker, aged rums spend time in barrels, which may introduce additional compounds that some people are sensitive to, though this is less established than the DAO-blocking effect of alcohol

Clear or lightly aged rums tend to be simpler in composition than dark or spiced varieties.
