Grape juice

Moderate histamine

Grape juice is moderately flagged for histamine sensitivity — grapes contain biogenic amines, and juice form concentrates their effect.

Grapes contain naturally occurring biogenic amines, and while fresh grape juice is generally lower in histamine than wine, it still appears on many histamine intolerance lists.

  • Biogenic amine content — grape juice typically contains biogenic amines (naturally occurring compounds related to histamine), which may contribute to sensitivity reactions; the histamine accumulation associated with wine is largely driven by fermentation, but fresh juice is not considered fully neutral

  • Darker varieties tend to be stronger — red or purple grape juice is generally considered more problematic than white grape juice, which is often better tolerated

White grape juice or apple juice are commonly used as lower-histamine substitutes in recipes and drinks.
