Ginger ale

Moderate histamine

Ginger ale is moderately tolerated — ginger itself is generally low-histamine, but additives and caffeine in some versions add complexity.

Plain ginger is considered relatively low in histamine, but commercial ginger ale is rarely just ginger and water.

  • Additives and flavorings — many commercial ginger ales contain natural flavors, caramel coloring, or preservatives that may be problematic for histamine-sensitive people

  • Caffeine content — most ginger ales are caffeine-free, which is a point in their favor compared to cola or other sodas; some "diet" versions may have additional artificial ingredients worth checking

Homemade ginger tea or fresh ginger water tends to be a gentler option if you enjoy that flavor.
