Energy drinks

High histamine

Energy drinks contain caffeine, which blocks DAO — the enzyme your body uses to break down histamine — making other foods hit harder.

Energy drinks don't necessarily contain a lot of histamine themselves, but caffeine interferes with how your body clears it.

  • DAO-blocking effect of caffeine — DAO is the enzyme your gut uses to break down histamine from food; caffeine is known to reduce its activity, which means histamine from your whole meal can build up more than it otherwise would

  • Often combined with other triggers — energy drinks frequently contain citrus flavoring and artificial additives, some of which are also reported as triggers by histamine-sensitive people; some also contain high-dose B vitamins, though their role in histamine sensitivity is not clearly established

The DAO-blocking effect means timing matters — having an energy drink alongside a histamine-rich meal tends to be more of an issue than either alone.
