Chicory

Low histamine

Fresh chicory leaves are generally low in histamine, though chicory-based coffee substitutes are more commonly flagged as a concern.

Fresh chicory as a leafy vegetable doesn't contain significant histamine and isn't known to interfere with how your body processes it.

  • Chicory root drinks are different — roasted chicory root, often used as a coffee substitute, is sometimes reported as problematic by people with histamine sensitivity, though the exact mechanism isn't fully established

  • Fresh vs. processed — the fresh vegetable and the roasted, processed root are quite different products with different tolerability profiles

As a fresh salad green or cooked vegetable, chicory is generally considered a low-risk choice.
