Chicken eggs

Low histamine

Egg whites can trigger histamine release in some people, while the yolk is generally much better tolerated.

Eggs are a bit nuanced — it's mostly the white, not the yolk, that tends to cause issues.

  • Egg white as a histamine liberator — egg whites are thought to prompt the body to release its own stored histamine, which is why some people react to them even though eggs don't contain much histamine themselves

  • Cooking helps — raw egg whites appear to be more problematic than cooked ones; fully cooked eggs are generally better tolerated than soft or runny preparations

If eggs seem to be an issue, trying just the yolk is a reasonable place to start.
