Carob

Low histamine

Carob is often suggested as a lower-histamine alternative to chocolate, without the histamine-triggering association that cocoa carries.

Cocoa is known to prompt the body to release its own stored histamine, but carob doesn't appear to share that association.

  • A gentler chocolate substitute — carob is not associated with histamine liberation in the way cocoa is, making it a popular swap for people who react to chocolate

  • Watch the product, not just the ingredient — carob chips or powders sometimes include additives or dairy components that may add complexity for sensitive people

If chocolate tends to be tricky for you, plain carob powder is often worth trying as a swap.
