Banana chips

Moderate histamine

Dried and processed banana chips carry the same histamine-liberating properties as fresh banana, sometimes concentrated.

Processing bananas into chips doesn't remove their histamine-liberating properties, and the drying process may concentrate certain compounds.

  • Concentration effect — drying fruit removes water but leaves the active compounds behind, meaning a small serving of chips can deliver more of them than the equivalent fresh fruit

  • Added ingredients — many commercial banana chips are fried in oil or coated with sugar and flavorings, which can add additional sensitivities on top of the banana itself

Checking the ingredients list for added citric acid or flavorings is worth the extra moment.
